The first feedback I got was for the Competition brief 'Greetings'. Fred said that it is not a small brief for me and that I should go beyond what the brief asks of me, creating a wide range of products, including gift wrap and different editions. This brief will be a good opportunity for me to communicate my understanding of the context of print on a commercial level. Then the delivery and distribution of course needs to be considered, opening more opportunities to create a larger range. The first thing I need to do is establish my audience, which in turn will help establish what my subject matter is going to be.
After this tutorial I feel I have more direction with my Final Major Project, my focus being on the relation between traditional and commercial. How will I continue to explore print and traditional processes, while finding a place for them commercially. Also what is commercially viable, in terms of time and practicality, and what would I charge for this at a professional level? This is a great direction for me, as it helps me to explore an answer to the question, where in the industry will I find my specialist practice when I graduate?
I need to kick start my FMP by looking at hi spec print companies such as Tigerprint and Hallmark, particularly for the 'Greetings' brief.
Contextually I need to consider what I mean by sustainability in relation to my own practice, and commercial and traditional print. I need to explore different print processes and how they are carried out at a professional level. I need to research design and print studios and start talking to them to establish a more solid definition of my own practice, and what I mean when I say I strive to produce sustainable print based design.
